About this product

A live-culture mustard with horseradish-style heat that goes up your nose, fermented for months instead of mixed with vinegar.

Most mustard is seed, vinegar and salt. Wise Goat's Fermented Spicy Mustard is soured by wild fermentation over several months, which gives it a tangy, live-culture bite and a sharp, nose-tingling heat much like horseradish. It is raw and unpasteurized, so the Lactobacillus cultures and enzymes that develop during fermentation are still in the jar. Mustard seed itself is a traditional digestive spice; fermenting it makes it a probiotic condiment. A little goes a long way.

Who this is for

  • You want probiotics on your plate at lunch without a side of kraut
  • You like hot mustard and horseradish and want one with real depth
  • You are avoiding vinegar, sugar and preservatives in condiments
  • You want a small jar that changes a sandwich, a brat or a marinade

How to use

Spread thin on brats, sandwiches and burgers. Whisk into soy sauce for a marinade, stir into tuna or egg salad, or thin with olive oil for a dressing. Add it cold rather than cooking it.

Details: 4 oz jar. Raw and organic. Keep refrigerated once opened. Live and fermenting, so open slowly over a sink.

Made by Wise Goat Organics in Hollister, California: a small, woman-owned, USDA Organic certified fermentery run by Mary Risavi, a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, in small batches in glass and stainless steel with produce grown within 20 miles of the kitchen. Two-time Good Food Awards winner.
