Seed-Oil-Free Grocery Shopping in Modesto

Frontier Organics at 429 McHenry Ave, Modesto is a seed-oil-free grocery store. Canola, soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, rice bran and cottonseed oil are automatic disqualifiers under the Frontier Standard — no product containing them goes on the shelf, in any aisle, at any price.

Which oils count as seed oils here?

The eight we refuse outright: canola, soybean, corn, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, rice bran and cottonseed. These are the industrially extracted, high-heat, solvent-processed oils that turn up in nearly every packaged food in a conventional supermarket — including in products marketed as organic and health-conscious.

What we do stock: California extra virgin olive oil, cold-pressed coconut oil, avocado oil, grass-fed butter and ghee, and rendered beef tallow. Fats you could have made in a kitchen a hundred years ago.

How do you actually check?

Someone reads the ingredient panel on every product before it is ordered, and reads it again when the case arrives, because manufacturers reformulate without telling anyone. If a label says "vegetable oil" without naming it, that is a no. If a vendor will not tell us what is in a proprietary blend, that is a no. If a product passes and later changes, it comes off the shelf.

The full rule set is on The Frontier Standard, and what we know about each supplier is in the vendor dossiers.

Why does olive oil pass but sunflower oil doesn't?

Extraction and stability. Olive oil is pressed from the fruit — mechanically, at low temperature, and it has been made that way for millennia. The eight oils on our disqualifier list are extracted from seeds under heat and, typically, with a chemical solvent, then deodorised and bleached to be palatable. They are also overwhelmingly polyunsaturated, which makes them fragile in the bottle and in the pan. We are not making a medical argument here. We are telling you which processing method we are willing to sell.

Is everything in the store organic?

No, and we would rather say so plainly. Organic certification is expensive and many of the small California ranches and makers we buy from farm better than certification requires while never paying for the label. We care more about what the animal ate, how the food was processed and whether the vendor will answer the question. Some products are certified organic. Some are better than organic and uncertified. We will tell you which is which.

Do you have a list of what's banned?

Yes — the automatic disqualifiers and the welcomed-ingredients list are both published on The Frontier Standard. Beyond seed oils it covers artificial colours and flavours, undisclosed "natural flavors," common preservatives, and a handful of sweeteners.
