Beef Tallow Skincare — What It Is and Why We Stock It
Tallow skincare is rendered beef fat, usually whipped with a small amount of another traditional oil. We stock it at 429 McHenry Ave in Modesto and ship it nationwide, free over $100, because it is one of the few moisturisers on the market that contains no seed oil, no synthetic fragrance and no water needing a preservative system.
What is tallow balm made of?
Rendered fat from cattle — the suet from around the kidneys, cleaned and slowly melted — and typically nothing else, or nothing else beyond olive oil, honey or beeswax. Compare that to a conventional "natural" moisturiser, where the first ingredient is water, the second is usually sunflower or grapeseed oil, and the rest is emulsifiers and preservatives holding the two together.
Why beef fat on your face?
The argument, and it is an old one, is compatibility: the fatty acid profile of ruminant fat is close to that of human sebum, so it absorbs rather than sitting on the surface. It is also stable — saturated and monounsaturated fats do not oxidise in the jar the way polyunsaturated seed oils do. We are not going to tell you it treats anything. It is a moisturiser made of one ingredient, and for a lot of people that is the point.

Does it smell like beef?
Properly rendered tallow does not. Badly rendered tallow does. The difference is how thoroughly the fat was cleaned and how gently it was melted — scorched fat carries the smell, slowly rendered fat does not. If you have tried tallow before and hated it, that is almost certainly what happened. Come in and open a jar before you buy.
Can I ship it?
Yes. Skincare, tallow butters and everything shelf-stable ships anywhere in the United States, free over $100. Refrigerated goods — raw dairy, meat, eggs — are in-store only.
Do you sell suet for rendering my own?
We do. Yolo Land & Cattle beef suet is sold by weight at $8 per pound, and bone marrow at $9 per pound, in The Farm Store. Ask at the counter and we will walk you through rendering it. If you buy a beef share, you can ask for the fat back on your cut sheet and render a year's worth at once.
